Exposure in Google: Google is the number one search engine. Getting ranked on the first page for a Google keyword search related to your business
will increase your online customer opportunities.
Reviews: Reviews on your Google Business Listing will dramatically increase your ranking. Google has been puttinga heavy emphasis on reviews
when it comes to rankings. It's nice to have reviews on your website for potential customers to see, but having reviews on your business
listing will increase your business's chances of being ranked on the first page of search results. Plus, Google allows the business owner to
respond to reviews. Not to mention, Business Listings with reviews immediately stand out in search results.
Marketing & Branding: By having a Google Business Listing along with a website (and possibly other marketing channels), your business has an opportunity
to send consistent, clear, professional messaging to potential customers, which helps build your business's brand.
Business Listings are Prominent: Even though Google has blended local (Google Places or Business Listings) results with organic (websites) results,
Business Listings are prominently displayed in the search results. Each listing will be highlighted with an alphabetically lettered
pincushion which is also displayed on the map to the right.
Smart Phones: Potential customers can search for your business from their smart phone in Google Places. Underneath each Business Listing, the
business's phone number is displayed. All the potential customer has to do is click on the phone number and their smart phone dials
the number. You do not want to miss out on such a great opportunity that makes it so easy for potential customers to contact your business.
Optimizing Your Google Business Listing
Claim Listing:
The first step is to claim the Business Listing. From here the Business Listing can be controlled and edited.
Link:
The link information for the Business Listing is located in the upper right-hand corner, next to the edit link and claimed listing.
The link information is used to create back links to the Business Listing from other places on the web.
Categories:
Google allows up to five categories to be chosen, with the first ones chosen being the most important. It is critical to
choose categories that are relevant to the key search words the business wants to be ranked for.
Description:
Google allows up to 200 characters to describe the business. This, along with the Categories section, is where it is critical
to use the right key search words.
Photos & Videos:
Google allows up to 10 photos and up to 5 videos. These can be optimized for search results.
Citations:
A citation is your business name, address and phone number listed some where's on the web. Citations to Google Business Listing optimization
is what link building is to website optimization. It's important to have your business listed in several directories that have a high page rank
and directories that are related to your business's industry. There are many free directories that are really good, but there are
times when a business should invest in some paid directories as well.
Reviews:
Google places a lot of emphasis on reviews when it comes to how they rank business listings. It is very important to have clients write reveiws for your business in your Google Business Listing and in other
directories that are used for reviews, such as Yelp, Angie's List, Merchant Circle, etc. The easier you make it for clients to write reveiws the more reviews you will get. You should also have a place on your website for
reviews and those reviews should be marked up semantically with schema.org code.
My Places:
Google allows the business to create custom maps and visitors can as well. These custom maps can offer some optimization for your Google Business Listing.
